Where It Began

How the Newcomer name began.

It started in Wisconsin, in 1989. Roy Newcomer — with his son Scott and his wife, Virginia “Ginny” Newcomer — founded Newcomer’s Home Inspection Service. What began as a family business grew, within a few years, into one of the largest home inspection firms in North America: fourteen inspectors on staff and more than 25,000 inspections to its name.

That success surfaced a bigger question worth solving — where do well-trained inspectors come from? In 1993, Roy and Scott answered it by founding the American Home Inspectors Training Institute in Waukesha, Wisconsin, built to train inspectors the right way, to a real standard.

In 1995, Scott launched Newcomer’s of America, a national home inspection franchise. He later restructured those franchises into independent firms and partnered with Roy to take the training institute nationwide — growing it into the largest home inspection training company in North America.

Three generations of Newcomers have carried the name forward. The mission has never changed: do the work right, teach it clearly, and raise the standard for everyone who comes next.

Scott Newcomer is one of the defining figures in American home inspection. Over 37 years, he has done the work at every level — inspecting homes, building companies, writing curriculum, mentoring inspectors, and helping professionalize the trade itself.

He opened his first company, Newcomer's Home Inspection Service, in 1989, and learned the trade the way that lasts: one home at a time. To date he has personally performed more than 10,000 inspections, and the companies he has founded and led have performed more than 100,000.

But where most inspectors stop at inspecting houses or teaching a class, Scott built the whole ecosystem. He founded ATI Home Inspector Training and created the ATI Certified Inspector credential; he co-founded the American Home Inspectors Training Institute (AHIT); he expanded inspection into a scalable model as a national inspection franchisor; he stood up call-center operations; and he was an early pioneer of inspection software, building digital reporting tools long before they became standard.

A voice for the profession

Scott's influence reaches well beyond any single company. He has served on industry committees and association chapters, championed government affairs and advocacy for inspectors nationwide, and helped bring formal home inspection standards to his home state of Wisconsin — testifying before the state Senate committee that passed them after a two-decade effort. The same drive to serve his community led him to public office as a state legislator, and it shapes his commitment today to opening the profession to America's Veterans.

Through it all, Scott has remained, at heart, a teacher — passionate about sharing what he knows and convinced that people grow into new skills the moment they're given a real opportunity and real support.

The Newcomer name in home inspection began with family. Alongside his father, Roy Newcomer, Scott helped build the education and technical resources that prepared a generation of inspectors — a documented part of the profession's history, and the foundation everything after was built on.

That instinct — do the work right, teach it clearly, and raise the standard — is the throughline of Scott's entire career, from the field to the classroom to the statehouse.

Beyond the work, Scott's life is grounded in family and community — the people and place that keep him building.

Across more than three decades, Scott has built and led companies, advocated for the profession in the halls of government, and helped write the standards inspectors work to today. In 2021 the Wisconsin REALTORS® Association named Scott and House to Home Inspections its Affiliate of the Year — with more than 30,000 inspections across his companies, and counting.
